Binita Ashar, M.D., M.B.A., FACS

Binita Ashar, a board-certified general surgeon, is a Medical Officer in the General Surgery Devices Branch of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. She joined the agency in 2000 and has been involved in the evaluation of a number of medical devices, including thermal ablation devices for the treatment of cancer and natural orifice endoscopic surgery devices. She received her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, attended medical school at Ohio State University, and completed her general surgery residency training at Fairview Hospital/Cleveland Clinic Health System. Dr. Ashar also earned a master of business administration from Johns Hopkins University.
From 2005 to 2006, Dr. Ashar served as Special Advisor for Medicine and Public Health for Homeland Security Affairs for Vice President Dick Cheney. Dr. Ashar is clinically active, treating patients at National Naval Medical Center and teaching medical students and residents at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
