Alan J. Fenn, Ph.D.
Alan J. Fenn is a senior staff member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He joined the MIT staff in 1981, and his principal research has been in developing adaptive microwave phased array antenna systems. He received his doctorate from The Ohio State University in electrical engineering. Dr. Fenn has applied his research on adaptive microwave phased arrays in developing a method for treating invasive breast cancer in the intact breast. The treatment technique uses wide-field adaptively focused microwave energy delivered by external applicators to heat and kill high-water, high-ion content breast cancer tumors and cancer cells in the margins, while avoiding damage to skin and other healthy tissues. He has collaborated with several medical institutions in FDA-approved clinical trials of the focused microwave thermotherapy treatment for invasive breast cancer. In these clinical trials, patients with early stage breast cancer and large breast cancer tumors have received the preoperative focused microwave thermotherapy treatment.
Dr. Fenn is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has membership in the Society of Surgical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, National Consortium of Breast Centers, and Society for Thermal Medicine. He is the author of three recent books on adaptive microwave phased arrays:
