Fattaneh Tavassoli, M.D.
Fattaneh A. Tavassoli is Professor of Pathology and Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences, and Director of Pathology in the Women's Health Program at Yale University. Dr. Tavassoli received her medical training and degree from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. After completing a residency in Anatomic Pathology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, she did a year of fellowship in Gynecologic Pathology St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. In 1976 she joined the Gynecologic and Breast Pathology Department at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology as a staff pathologist; she subsequently became Vice Chairman and in 1994 Chairman of that Department. In 2003 she moved to Yale University School of Medicine where she currently practices as Director of the Gynecology and Breast Pathology Service.
Internationally recognized as an expert in breast and gynecologic pathology and serving on the editorial board of several pathology journals, she is the author of two editions of Pathology of the Breast, co-editor of the World Health Organization's "Classification of Tumors of the Breast and Female Genital Organs," and co-author of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) Fascicle "Tumors of the Breast" due for distribution in the fall of 2008. She has also authored more than 180 papers in major national and international journals. A sought-after consultant, speaker, and educator in the fields of gynecologic and breast pathology, she lectures extensively around the world and is organizing a Foundation for Advancement of Women's Health through providing courses and educational opportunities for pathologists worldwide.
