WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
The National Cancer Institute Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Advanced Topics for Registry Professionals Conference will be a 2-day educational session on hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms for registry professionals. Hospital and central registry staff will benefit from a systematic review of key concepts including hematopoiesis, relevant anatomy, and complex disease processes, with an emphasis on diagnostic testing, confirmation of disease, and clinical workup. Significant notes, excerpts, and instruction from the 2010 Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Case Reportability and Coding Manual, and use of the Hematopoietic Database, will be covered in greater detail than during the prerequisite Web-based educational presentations. Staging of these neoplasms will also be included using the Collaborative Stage Data Collection System Version 2.
Participants will:
- Expand understanding of the anatomy and physiology of lymphatic and hematopoietic systems
- Expand understanding of complex disease processes, state-of-the-art diagnostic testing, requirements for confirmation of malignant disease, and what is involved in routine and unique or special-case diagnostic and staging workup of hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms
- Apply the 2010 Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Case Reportability and Coding Manual and the Hematopoietic Database to determine single versus multiple primaries, and accurately code these neoplasms via primary site, histology, behavior, and grade for these neoplasms
- Utilize the Collaborative Stage Data Collection System Manual and site-specific schema relevant to staging hematopoietic and lymphoid neoplasms
- Interact with subject matter experts with backgrounds in the WHO Classification of Diseases of Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues and the clinical workup and staging of these interesting and complex neoplasms
PRE-WORKSHOP TEST:
Participants will code and abstract 10 cases using the online reliability software prior to the 2-day 2010 SEER Advanced Topics educational sessions. Participants will be notified by email when the pre-workshop exercises are available. Instructions will be provided and participants must pay strict attention to the Web portal opening and closing dates to ensure they are included in the abstracting and coding of the 10 cases.
Results from the pre-workshop exercises will be used to develop educational materials and to specifically target educational needs to our audience.
