Workshop

The 2008 SEER workshop will focus on leukemias, lymphomas and head and neck cases.

Leukemias, lymphomas and head and neck cases are often difficult to abstract and code.  The proximity of sites within the head and neck region make primary site determination and staging difficult.  Diagnostic confirmation of leukemias presents challenges; many related to advances in medical practice. Primary site determination and staging, especially for nodal vs. extranodal lymphomas, are problem areas needing more in depth education.

Data collection for these types of cases will be covered in depth during the 2008 SEER workshop.  Workshop topics will include

  • Anatomy
  • Diagnostic confirmation
  • Primary site determination
  • Multiple primary determination
  • Histology coding
  • Staging
  • Treatment

Objectives

The participants will be able to:

  1. Correctly make multiple primary decisions for leukemias, lymphomas, and head and neck cases.
  2. Apply correct coding rules for determining primary site for leukemias/ lymphomas, nodal and extranodal lymphomas, and head and neck cases.
  3. Assign the correct Collaborative Staging elements and site-specific factors for head and neck, nodal and extranodal lymphomas.
  4. Correctly assign treatment codes for head and neck, leukemias, nodal lymphomas and extranodal lymphomas.
  5. Correctly code histologies for leukemias, leukemia/lymphomas, and lymphomas.

Mini-Reliability

Fifteen cases will be abstracted and coded by participants prior to the workshop.  Workshop materials will be developed using the results of the pre-conference abstraction and coding to specifically target the educational needs identified.
